Fostering a Global Mindset

Michael-Bryant Hicks ’96, a first-generation college graduate, established the Marleigh Desmond Hicks Study Abroad Scholarship Fund to support study abroad opportunities for first-generation students.
“Carolina is a microcosm of the world, and it is important for students to seek out and access as many different backgrounds and cultures as they can,” Hicks said. “I want to take away any number of fears that may prevent a student — who grew up like me — from studying abroad.”
Hicks explained that the most rewarding aspect of establishing the scholarship is spending time with students. His commitment during the campaign has enabled 11 students to study abroad so far.
“It’s important to be visible to those students like me — especially minority students coming from rural North Carolina who may be thinking that their challenges in accessing a college education are unique,” said Hicks.
In spring 2022, the scholarship supported Lesley Estrada Tovar ’23, a political science and global studies double major, as she studied at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. This was Tovar’s first time traveling outside of the United States.
“Receiving this scholarship meant that I was able to gain so much knowledge, lifelong friendships and take in some delicious food. I don’t think I can put into words how insightful, educational and fun my time in Japan was,” said Tovar.
