The UNC Writing and Learning Center provides a variety of services to help students excel, including personalized academic coaching tailored to your needs. The center also offers peer tutoring, group workshops and online resources that help students with everything from test prep to STEM courses.

The Writing and Learning Center serves as a central academic hub, offering all Carolina students access to a range of academic services designed to maximize their success on campus and beyond. These services include the coaching and resources they need to excel both in and out of the classroom. Thanks to generous support from more than 420 donors during the Campaign for Carolina, the future is bright with growing student demand and a project underway to move the center and its activities to the Robert B. House Undergraduate Library.

Michael Stutts ’02, a proud donor and member of the center’s advisory board, is dedicated to building awareness of the center’s comprehensive services and “leveling the playing field” by helping all students regardless of academic level or background.

“I want every student who goes to UNC to get the same enriching experience that I did,” Stutts said. “I know that not everybody begins at the same starting line, and I’m passionate about creating that boost for people who need it.”

Advocates and donors like Stutts help ensure adequate resources and staffing to maintain and enhance peer tutoring, workshops and programming, online resources and academic coaching, all of which embody the core of the center’s mission.

Stutts and center leadership are confident that the transformative relocation to the Undergraduate Library will “increase its physical footprint and reach even more students.” He hopes that one day all students will know about the center and will choose to utilize its coaching services and extensive collection of resources.

Stutts’ work on the advisory board has also allowed him to see the role that the center could play in supporting students’ holistic wellness.

“One of the most vulnerable times in a person’s life from a mental health standpoint is when they go to college. Having a supportive place like the Writing and Learning Center to help alleviate some of the stress and pressure related to figuring out a rigorous new academic environment is going to create a holistically better mental health experience for somebody,” Stutts said.

The Campaign for Carolina created the momentum for the center to expand its activities and plan a move that will increase its accessibility and make a difference in the lives of students for generations to come.
